LEWISBURG, Pa. - With two victories and a broken school record at last weekend's Patriot League Championships, Bucknell men's track and field's Justin Hicks (Wilmington, Del./Tower Hill School) was named the Susquehanna Valley Limousine Bison Athlete of the Week on Monday. By scoring in all four events in which he competed, Hicks helped the Bison to their second consecutive team title at Lafayette's Metzgar Fields Athletic Complex on Saturday.
Hicks, the Patriot League Rookie of the Meet at the 2010 indoor championships, had a hand in gathering 36 points for Bucknell during the course of competition. His wins came in the 100 meters and as part of the 4x400 relay. He was also second as a member of the 4x100 relay and third overall in the 200 meters.
As the second leg in the 4x100, Hicks helped lead the relay to a time of 40.95 seconds, breaking Bucknell's program record. The team was the first-ever in the Orange and Blue to clock in under 41 seconds. Had the Bison not finished second to Lafayette's 40.63 in the race, Bucknell would have also claimed the Patriot League record in the event.
Individually, Hicks earned his first career Patriot League title at an outdoor championship with his victory in the 100 meters. After running a career-best 10.67 seconds in the preliminary heats of the event, giving him possession of seventh all-time at Bucknell, Hicks came back in the finals the next day with a mark of 10.69.
The success continued at 200 meters where he recorded the then-fastest time of his career in the prelims (21.76) only to outdo himself in Saturday's final with a time of 21.59 seconds.
Hicks capped off his impressive weekend by running the third leg in Bucknell's victorious 4x400 relay. The quartet finished in 3:16.64. It was the fourth event of the meet in which Hicks had earned an IC4A Championship-qualifying mark.
The Bison Athlete of the Week honor is the first of Hicks' career.
Bucknell won the Patriot League Championships convincingly with 186 points, while Army was second with 157. Third-place Navy was the only other squad in an eight-team field with more than 100 points, coming in at 132.5. The Bison have won all three of their scored outdoor meets this spring. They will have a chance at continuing their recent success this weekend when they make the trip to the IC4A Championships in Princeton, N.J., May 13-15.
