LEWISBURG, Pa. - Wrestling in Davis Gym for the final time, Bucknell's three seniors - David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central), Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) and Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) - each posted victories and helped stake the Bison to a 23-6 lead en route to a 23-16 victory over American Saturday afternoon. Bucknell completed the regular season with a 12-6 overall record and finished 6-0 against EIWA competition for the first time in program history.
The 12 wins this year equals the program record established by the 2006-07 squad. Additionally, the Bison finished a campaign with an undefeated conference record for the first time since they went 5-0 in the East Coast Conference in 1987-88.
Bucknell and American (7-10, 0-3 EIWA) had a total of seven ranked wrestlers compete Saturday and six of them earned victories. Marble (No. 17 at 133), Rendos (No. 10 at 165), Riccio (No. 15 at 174) and Kevin LeValley (No. 7 at 149) earned wins for the Bison, while Jasen Borshoff (No. 18 at 125) and Mike Cannon (No. 4 at 184) posted victories for the Eagles.
In the only matchup of ranked wrestlers, LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) was victorious over No. 10 Kyle Borshoff at 149 pounds. The low-scoring bout was decided on riding time by LeValley. After a scoreless first period, Borshoff recorded an escape in the final 35 seconds of the second to take a 1-0 lead. LeValley's lone escape came 10 seconds into the third period and evened the score. Both wrestlers were locked in a near-stalemate for the final 30 seconds of competition, and LeValley earned the riding time point with 1:14 of riding time. It was his ninth consecutive win and improved his season record to 35-5. He is also now 8-4 against ranked opponents this season.
The Bison trailed 6-0 after forfeiting at 125 pounds, and proceeded to win the next six bouts. A win by John Regan (Plum Borough, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) at 141 pounds gave Bucknell the lead for good.
Marble defeated Thomas Williams at 133 pounds to start off the streak of six straight Bison wins. His 17-8 major decision was one of two bonus-point victories for Bucknell, and it was his ninth in a row to improve to 25-7 on the year.
After Regan and LeValley posted wins, Brantley Hooks (Spartanburg, S.C./James F. Byrnes) took the mat at 157 for the Bison. He outscored Sean McCarty 8-2 over the final two periods for his 21st win of the season.
Rendos increased the Bucknell lead to 17-6 with an easy 13-1 major decision over Tanner Shaffer. Rendos nearly earned a pin in the final minute of the second period, but had to settle for a three-point near fall instead. It was Rendos' 14th straight EIWA dual victory and he finished his career 26-3 in EIWA duals.
Riccio then scored Bucknell's final points with a pin at 174. It took him just 1:21 to record the fall over Phillip Barreiro, his 30th victory of the year. He is just the third Bison to post two career 30-win campaigns.
The Bison struggled at the heavier weight classes as Rob Waltko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), Jay Hahn (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) and Joe McMullan (Easton, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) each lost at 184, 197 and heavyweight, respectively. Hahn lost 6-5 on riding time as the official did not award a late takedown despite desperate pleas from the Bison coaching staff and pro-Bucknell crowd inside Davis Gym.
Prior to the match, Marble, Rendos and Riccio were honored on Senior Day. Each senior has piled up more than 100 career wins, with Rendos second on the program's all-time list with 112.
With the dual portion of its schedule complete, Bucknell will now turn its attention towards the EIWA Championships, which will take place in two weeks at Lehigh. The Bison tied for third in the team standings with Penn at last year's event.
