LEWISBURG, Pa. - Three-time NCAA qualifier and 2009 All-American Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) has been invited to next month's National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) All-Star Classic. The senior 165-pounder on the Bucknell wrestling team will compete in the event, which will be held Nov. 22 in Titan Gym in Fullerton, Calif.
The NWCA All-Star Classic is a prestigious event that showcases the top collegiate wrestlers from across the country. Rendos, who finished fifth at last year's NCAA Championships, is expected to face Iowa State's Jonathan Reader in his bout. A two-time All-American, Reader defeated Rendos by decision at both the 2008 and 2009 NCAA Championships.
Rendos posted a 33-8 record in 2008-09, equaling the Bucknell program record for wins in a season. He earned a runner-up finish at the EIWA Championships and proceeded to become the first Bison to earn All-America honors in nearly a decade-and-a-half by placing fifth at the NCAA Championships. Rendos is just the fourth different Bucknell grappler to become an All-American.
Entering his senior year, Rendos, who along with classmate David Marble will be attempting to become the first four-time NCAA qualifier at Bucknell since Bobby Ferraro (1992-95), already ranks among the best in program history in wins (88, T-5th), pins (19, T-10th) and winning percentage (.779, 6th).
Rendos and the Bison open their 2009-10 season Nov. 15 in Chapel Hill, N.C., with matches against ACC foes Virginia Tech, Virginia and North Carolina. Prior to that date, Bucknell will host an intrasquad match Nov. 3 at 7 p.m. inside Davis Gym.
