HAMPTON, Va. - On the first day of the two-day Virginia Duals Friday, the Bucknell wrestling team split with No. 24 Kent State and Ohio. The Bison lost to the nationally ranked Golden Flashes by a 22-10 margin, but came back to post a 22-13 win over the Bobcats in the consolation bracket. Bucknell now will wrestle Navy Saturday at 10 a.m. with a chance to still finish as high as fifth in the 16-team bracketed event.
Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) and Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) each went 2-0 on the day for Bucknell, while No. 13 Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) made his return to the Bison lineup with a 13-3 major decision at 165 over Ohio's Steve Wilson in the second match. Rendos had missed four consecutive duals for Bucknell, which remains above .500 on the season with a 6-5 record.
LeValley, who posted major decisions in both matches at 149, has now won four straight and his 19 wins this season are three shy of his freshman-year total.
Thanks to a pair of shutouts, the 174-pound Riccio has now won five matches in a row and eight of his last 10 to improve to 20-11 this year. In seven of those wins that have gone all seven minutes he has not let his opponent score a point.
Against Kent State, which has four wrestlers ranked in the top 20 of their respective weight classes, LeValley and Riccio were joined in the win column by Tyler Riccio (Warren, N.J./Bridgewater-Raritan Regional) as he shut out Ross Tice, 3-0, at 157 pounds. Bucknell's lone ranked grappler, No. 20 David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central), suffered a 9-6 loss to No. 11 Dan Mitcheff at 133. All six of Marble's losses this season have come to ranked foes.
The Bison bounced back from their loss to the Golden Flashes by winning six of the 10 bouts against the Bobcats. Bucknell led 11-3 after the first four matches as 125-pounder Derek Reber (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and LeValley earned major decisions and Marble posted a 9-4 decision against Quentin Keyes.
After a loss by Tyler Riccio at 157, Bucknell sealed the outcome of the match with three consecutive wins by Rendos, Shane Riccio and Rob Waltko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny), who was wrestling for the first time on the day and took a 10-4 decision from Brian Driscoll at 184.
Bucknell's Saturday opponent, Navy, a fellow EIWA member, is 3-1 this season, but won the Navy Classic in November, an event in which the Bison placed third. The Mids upset seventh-seeded Virginia (20-15) and lost to No. 13 Oklahoma State (37-3) on Friday.
