PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Bucknell wrestling team won six of the first eight individual bouts as it defeated Brown 20-12 Saturday evening at the Pizzitola Center. It was the sixth win in the last eight matches for the Bison as they improved to 7-6 overall and evened their EIWA record at 2-2.
Back-to-back victories at 125 and 133 by Derek Reber (Lewisburg, Pa./Lewisburg Area) and David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central) staked Bucknell to an early 8-0 lead. Reber improved to a team-best 23-7 this year, including 11-2 in duals, with an 8-4 decision against Greg Einfrank. Reber has not lost to an unranked foe since Dec. 5.
Marble, who is ranked 20th at 133, posted the only victory not by decision in the match with a dominating 22-6 technical fall over Eli Harris. It was the 70th career win for Marble, who is one win away from his third consecutive 20-win season.
After a loss by Adam Healey (Wilkes Barre, Pa./Wyoming Seminary) at 141, Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) got another win for the Bison as he posted a 5-2 decision. It was his fifth win in his last six matches and his 20th victory of the season.
At 157, Scott Sechler (Slatington, Pa./Northern Lehigh) fought hard, but could not overcome an early 6-3 deficit and lost to Bryan Tracy by a tight 8-7 score.
The Bison then won three consecutive matches to take a 20-6 advantage. No. 12 Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) got the streak started, but needed overtime to defeat Chris Musser, 4-2, at 165. The only points during regulation were a takedown by Musser and two escapes by Rendos. Rendos then recorded a takedown in overtime for his ninth win in his last 10 bouts.
Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) extended his personal winning streak to seven at 174 pounds with a 3-0 shutout of Brad Crudden. It was the third time in the last four matches that Riccio posted a shutout.
David Thompson (West Liberty, Ohio/Graham Local) rounded out the Bucknell scoring with a 3-2 win over Matt Gevelinger at 184. Thompson earned the victory with a third-period reversal and one point for riding time.
Brown (2-6, 0-3 EIWA) then claimed the two heaviest weight classes to narrow its final deficit to 20-12.
Bucknell, which has not lost consecutive matches since late November will be home twice next weekend. The Bison will host Liberty on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Old Dominion Sunday also at 1 p.m. Both matches will be held in Davis Gym.
