LEWISBURG, Pa. - In front of a large crowd inside Davis Gym, the Bucknell wrestling team hosted No. 5 Missouri Sunday afternoon and had a solid showing despite a 25-16 loss to the Tigers. Highlighting the meet for Bucknell was a thrilling overtime victory for Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area) over No. 1 Nick Marable at 165 pounds. David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central), Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) and Lewisburg native Derek Reber also posted victories for Bucknell.
Opening its third season of competition after a four-year hiatus, Bucknell is now 0-1 on the season, while Missouri, which defeated Lock Haven Saturday night by a 32-9 margin, improved to 2-0.
While there were five ranked wrestlers that competed in the meet, the only bout that featured a pair of ranked grapplers was at 165 where No. 17 Rendos faced top-ranked Marable, who owned a 54-12 career record and was taken down just twice last year. Both wrestlers earned an escape during regulation as the match went into overtime tied 1-1. In the one-minute sudden-victory overtime period Rendos nearly posted a takedown, but Marable was able to get out of bounds first. Rendos then took Marable down in the first of two 30-second overtime frames to go up 3-1. Neither wrestler scored in the final 30-second period as Rendos picked up his 61st career win and tied the meet at 3-3.
The Tigers, who had two more ranked wrestlers in the four heaviest weight classes, won convincingly at 174, 184, 197 and HWT. Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills) lost to No.4 Raymond Jordan at 174 by a 13-3 major decision, while Jay Hahn (Malvern, Pa./Great Valley) lost by technical fall (20-4) to No. 6 Maxwell Askren. David Thompson (West Liberty, Ohio/Graham Local) fell to Dorian Henderson by an 11-2 major decision at 184, while Sean Lo Curto (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City) was pinned by Dominique Bradley in 1:45 at heavyweight. LoCurto typically wrestles at 197 pounds.
Bucknell, which lost to Missouri 30-9 last January, was trailing 22-3 with the final four bouts to be contested. The Bison proceeded to win three of those four to cut their final deficit to just nine.
Wrestling in front of a number of hometown supporters, Reber got things going for Bucknell at 125 with a decisive 10-0 major decision over Troy Dolan. Reber scored on a pair of takedowns, a reversal and a three-point near fall as Dolan battled a slight ankle injury.
Marble, who is ranked 14th nationally at 133 pounds, recorded Bucknell's only pin of the day. He was leading 6-3 at the time of the pin of Todd Schavrien, which just beat the second-period horn (4:57).
Luke Chohany (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita) fought hard at 141 to extend the Bison streak to three consecutive wins, but he dropped a 5-2 decision to Marcus Hoehn. Chohany and Hoehn were scoreless at the end of the first period, but Hoehn recorded a pair of takedowns in the second period.
LeValley concluded the meet on a high note as he posted an impressive 6-4 win over Andrew Sherry. LeValley led 4-1 at the end of two periods before Sherry battled back to tie the score at 4-all. LeValley then added a late escape and earned one point for riding time for the victory.
Bucknell put up a solid showing as it had one freshman, four sophomores and five juniors compete, while Missouri had two juniors and four seniors in its lineup.
Prior to the meet Ben Askren, a two-time national champion and a 2008 Olympian, conducted a wrestling clinic in Davis Gym.
Bucknell will head to Annapolis, Md., for the Navy Open this Saturday, Nov. 22. The Bison's next dual meet is against EIWA foe Army next Monday, Nov. 24, at 7 p.m. A live video broadcast will be available through Bison Vision.
