
Women's Tennis Continues At Day Two Of Bucknell Invitational

LEWISBURG, Pa. - Freshman Dara Dwojewski (Chester, N.J./West Morris Mendham) and senior Caitlin Baffa (Dix Hills, N.Y./Half Hollow Hills High School East) of the Bucknell women's tennis team won the consolation bracket of Flight A doubles on the second day of the Bucknell Invitational, Saturday.
Dwojewski and Baffa opened the second day of the tournament with a win (8-3) against Hallahan and Haley of Mount Saint Mary's in the consolation bracket of Flight A doubles on Saturday. The duo went on to face Courtney Reed and Emily Urda of Villanova to come away with the win (8-6) in the Flight A consolation bracket.
The pair dropped their first match on Friday to Rebecca Poole and Zena Williams of Duquesne (8-1), but went on to pick up a win over Kerri Swan and Joy Johnson of Loyola (8-5), to move on to today's rounds.
Also in Flight A doubles, sophomore Tania Varela (Quito, Ecuador/Alliance Academy) and freshman Lauren Lucido (Woodstock, Md./St. Pauls School For Girls) faced Jaclyn Williamson and Ashley Reed of Villanova in the semifinal round of Flight A doubles on Saturday evening. The pair came away with the win (9-7) and will face Denise Harjonto and Diana Popescu of Buffalo on Sunday.
Varela and Lucido opened the weekend with a win over Kaitlin Hallahan and Emma Haley of Mount Saint Mary's (8-4) and Andreea Novaceanu and Tina Jacob of Buffalo (8-2) on Friday.
In the first day of singles action, Dwojewski and Baffa remain in the main draw for their flights. In Flight B singles, Dwojewski defeated Stephanie Dunn of Loyola (6-3, 6-1) and Becky Poole of Duquesne (6-3, 6-2). She will face Smaranda Stan of Buffalo in the semifinal tomorrow. Baffa defeated Lauren Cassle of Loyola (6-2, 7-6) and Lanna Buehler of Duquesne (6-4, 6-4) in Flight C singles. She will play Tina Jacob of Buffalo in the semifinal tomorrow.
Junior Paulina Gamboa (Mexico City, Mexico/Greengates School) remains in contention for the consolation title in Flight A singles. She dropped her first match to Andrea Novaceanu of Buffalo (6-2,6-2), but went on to pick up a win against Caitlyn Day of Loyola (8-4) and will face Carlin Erksine of Villanova on Sunday.
Sophomore Carlin Calcaterra (Hinsdale, Ill./Hinsdale Central) is in the consolation bracket of Flight B singles after dropping her first match to Johanna Bezjack of Duquesne (6-1, 6-2) and picking up a win over Joy Johnson of Loyola (8-1). She will face Emily Bolchoz of Mount Saint Mary's tomorrow.
In Flight D singles, junior JoAnna Grossman (Florham Park, N.J./Hanover Park High School) remains in the consolation bracket after dropping her first match of the day to Alex Albano of Duquesne (6-1, 7-5) and picking up a win over Melanie Ocampos of Loyola (8-0)
The Bucknell Invitational will wrap up on Sunday.
