PRINCETON, N.J. - With a berth in Sunday's fifth-place game on the line, the Bucknell women's water polo team was outscored 4-0 in the third quarter and fell to sixth-seeded Maryland 11-6 Saturday evening at the Eastern Championship at DeNunzio Pool. The Bison, seeded seventh in the eight-team field, will face eighth-seeded Harvard for seventh place Sunday morning at 9 a.m.
Bucknell (14-17) fell to 2-4 this season against the Terrapins, including losses in each of the last four meetings.
Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell), who totaled one goal and three assists in a near-upset of No. 19 Michigan earlier in the day, led the Bison with two goals against Maryland, who will take on Brown on Sunday for fifth place.
Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) made six saves in goal for Bucknell and upped her season total to 216, 10 shy of her 2006 total.
Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) was one of four Bison to net single goals. Her tally was the 133rd of her career, moving her into fifth place on Bucknell's career list.
The game was close throughout the first half as the Terrapins led just 5-4 at halftime. However, Maryland scored four goals in the third quarter, while blanking the Bison at the same time to break the game open.
With a win Sunday morning against Harvard, Bucknell will equal its second-best finish at the Eastern Championship. The Bison finished fourth last year, marking their best-ever showing at the tournament that determines an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. In 2004 and 2005 Bucknell finished seventh.
