COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Behind a career-high 15 saves from goalie Mandy Bynum (San Jose, Calif./Leland) and a team-high three goals from Meagan Gins (Albuquerque, N.M./Valley), the Bucknell women's water polo team defeated host Maryland, 7-5, in its first game of the Maryland Invitational Sunday. The victory snapped a three-game losing streak for the Bison, who then fell to No. 16 Michigan in the second game of the day by an 11-7 margin.
Bynum had saved as many as 14 shots in a game on three occasions, once in each of her first three seasons. With six more stops against the Wolverines she easily eclipsed the 800 mark for her career on Sunday and is now just 80 behind Lindsay Chesterfield's program record of 892.
Bucknell (2-6) and Maryland's scores mirrored each other except in the second quarter when the Bison shut out the Terps in the deciding period 2-0. The scores were 2-2 in the first quarter, 1-1 in the third and 2-2 in the fourth as the two division rivals played a non-league game.
Valentina Rozas (Pico Rivera, Calif./El Rancho), who is second on the team to Gins with 10 goals in her rookie campaign, scored a pair of tallies, while Shana Palencia (Glendale, Calif./Hoover) and Jennifer Swoyer (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added one apiece. Rozas also recorded a team-high three steals.
The Bison, who started the year receiving votes in the CWPA national Top-20 poll, lost for the fifth time this year to a ranked foe against the 16th-ranked Wolverines. Michigan jumped out to a 5-1 first quarter advantage and led 11-4 at the end of three before a spirited Bucknell comeback brought the final margin to four goals.
Elizabeth Jensen (San Mateo, Calif./St. Ignatius Prep) highlighted the comeback, which featured a number of 6-on-5 opportunities. Jensen finished with four goals in the contest, many with an extra-man advantage. Overall, Bucknell was 5-for-8 in those situations.
Rozas and Gins each registered one more goal in the nightcap. Gins now has a team-high 18 goals to bring her career total to 136, just eight away from fourth place on Bucknell's all-time list. In fact, she is within 62 of Meg Blitzer's program record.
After two weekends on the road against a grueling slate of opponents, Bucknell makes its first appearance at home next weekend when it hosts the Bucknell Invitational Feb. 24-25. Kinney Natatorium will be the home of 16 games on Saturday and Sunday. The Bison will play Wagner, Villanova, Iona and Marist over the course of the weekend.
