TROY, N.Y. - The Bucknell wrestling team battled against tough competition, but was unable to come away with a victory in the team scores, falling in all three of its match-ups at the Northeast Duals on Saturday. To begin the day, the Bison (0-4) dropped a 33-6 decision to No. 5 Michigan, followed by a 24-12 loss to Appalachian State and a 24-15 setback against No. 13 Hofstra.
To wrap up the day's action, Bucknell wrestled its closest dual of the day. The Pride began the contest with a 13-0 lead after Dave Tomasette, ranked No. 8 at 125 pounds according to the latest InterMat/NWCA/NWMA Division I Individual Rankings, registered an 11-3 major decision over freshman José Matos (Williamstown, N.J./St. Augustine Prep), No. 4 Lou Ruggirello pinned No. 14 sophomore David Marble (Harpursville, N.Y./Harpursville Central) 2:02 into the 133-pound bout and No. 5 Charles Griffin edged sophomore Luke Chohany (Duncannon, Pa./Susquenita), 7-4.
Freshman 149-pounder Kevin LeValley (Hugo, Colo./Limon) put the Bison on the board with his 6-1 win against Mitch Smith. After freshman Ryan Ochalek (Oil City, Pa./Oil City) fell to Anthony Tortura, 4-3 at 157, sophomore Andy Rendos (Brockway, Pa./Brockway Area), ranked 16th at 165 pounds, pinned Ryan Patrovich in 4:01, pulling the Orange and Blue to within seven at 16-9.
That would be as close as Bucknell would come, however, as Hofstra responded with an 11-2 major decision by No. 16 Alton Lucas over freshman Rob Waltko (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Allegheny) to extend the advantage to 20-9.
The Bison picked up victories in two of the final three bouts. Freshman David Thompson (West Liberty, Ohio/Graham Local) recorded a 4-2 decision against Justin Danz at 184 and sophomore heavyweight George Hingson (Moon Township, Pa./Moon Area) posted his third win of the day, a 6-2 decision over James Guerin, bringing the final score to 24-15.
In its second match-up of the day, Bucknell fell down, 4-0, against Appalachian State after Frank Celorria opened with a 14-3 major decision over sophomore Greg Hart (Bedminster, N.J./Bernards) at 125 pounds.
Marble brought the Bison to within one at 4-3 with his 10-6 victory over Terreyl Williams at 133. However, the Mountaineers responded with wins at the next three weights. Marcus Cox posted a 18-10 major decision over freshman Eric Harris (Green River, Wyo./Green River) at 141, fifth-ranked Scott Ervin handed LeValley a 4-1 setback at 149, and at 157, Eddie Hutchinson pinned Ochalek in 5:50.
Bucknell climbed to within 17-9 after wins by Rendos and sophomore 174-pounder Shane Riccio (Warren, N.J./Watchung Hills). Rendos logged a 7-1 decision against Tommy Hutchinson and Riccio picked up a 5-0 decision against Neal Martin.
But with victories at 184 and 197, Appalachian State clinched the dual as Austin Trotman defeated Thompson, 6-3, and John Allen Griswold registered a 13-1 major decision against sophomore Sean LoCurto (Garden City, N.Y./Garden City).
Hingson then closed things out with a 9-4 win for the Orange and Blue against Jared Campbell to make the final score, 24-12.
In the day's opener, Bucknell found itself outmatched by No. 5 Michigan. Five Bison went up against ranked opponents as LeValley faced No. 2 Josh Churella at 149 (9-1), Ochalek took on No. 17 Jeff Marsh at 157 (10-3), Rendos battled No. 2 Eric Tannenbaum at 165 (12-3), Riccio matched up with No. 4 Steve Luke at 174 (16-7) and Thompson wrestled No. 3 Tyrell Todd at 184 (8-1).
Hingson was the lone member of the Orange and Blue to post a victory against the Wolverines as he spoiled the shutout by pinning Matt Guhn 5:39 into the final bout.
The Bison will be back in action on Saturday, Dec. 1, as the squad will play host to George Mason and Millersville in its home opener, beginning at 1 p.m. in Davis Gym.
