STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Senior Kyle Walter (Mifflinburg, Pa./Mifflinburg Area) went 4-for-8 over two games as the Bucknell baseball team split a doubleheader with Stony Brook, taking game one by a 2-1 margin but falling in game two, 5-4, in 11 innings at Stony Brook's University Field on Saturday afternoon. With the split, the Bison move to 6-10 on the season while the Seawolves sit at 1-14.
In the first inning of game one, Andres Perez reached with a two-out single, stole second then came home on an RBI single by Isidro Fortuna, giving Stony Brook a 1-0 lead.
Then in the top of the sixth, senior Matt Capece (Bowie, Md./DeMatha Catholic) reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Walter, tying the score at one. The Bison went on to plate the eventual winning run in the inning with Walter coming home on an error by Seawolves' shortstop Keith Fier.
Junior Matt Curry (Towanda, Pa./Towanda) held the Stony Brook hitters to one run on six hits with no walks two strikeouts to record the complete-game victory (1-4) for Bucknell while Matt Restivo suffered the loss (0-2) for the Seawolves. He threw 5.1 innings and let up two unearned runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts. Gary Novakowski relieved him and pitched 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing one hit with no walks and one strikeout.
Senior Brad Duvall (Hampstead, Md./Hereford) was the lone Bison to record multiple hits in the contest as he went 2-for-4 at the plate with a double. Fortuna hit 3-for-3 for Stony Brook with an RBI.
In game two, Bucknell fell behind 4-0 to start the contest. Jon Pasieka reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Peter Milani in the second for the Seawolves' first run. Chris Sipp singled and came home on a triple by Perez in the second, giving Stony Brook a 2-0 lead. Then in the fifth, Fier and Fortuna scored on back-to-back errors for the third and fourth runs.
The Bison rallied with four runs in the seventh on five hits. With one out in the inning, junior Dustin Kapson (Sweet Valley, Pa./Lake Lehman) and sophomore Shawn Hirsch (Morristown, N.J./Morristown) reached with singles and senior Chris Grandizio (Bloomsburg, Pa./Bloomsburg) followed with an RBI single to plate Kapson. Hirsch then came home on an RBI groundout by Capece and sophomore Austin Turban (Northfield, Ill./New Trier) brought in Grandizio with a single. Turban later scored the tying run for the Orange and Blue when Walter forced a throw to second with a stolen base.
Bucknell could not manage its second come-from-behind victory of the day, however. In the 11th inning with the score tied at four, Chris Cruz crossed the plate on a fielder's choice to clinch the win for Stony Brook.
Sophomore Jason Buursma (Seattle Wash./Lakeside School) worked 4.2 innings of relief for the Bison and took the loss (0-1) as he allowed one run on two hits with one walk and seven strikeouts. Senior Jacob Moss (Fresno, Calif./San Joaquin Memorial) started for Orange and Blue and allowed four runs, one earned, on seven hits with two walks and six strikeouts over six innings. Seawolves' hurler Nick Abel recorded the win (1-1) as he pitched 1.1 hitless innings with one walk and one strikeout. Starter Mike Errigo went 6.2 innings and allowed four runs on eight hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Walter, Turban and junior Ryan Gryskevicz (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) all had multiple-hits in the contest for Bucknell. Walter went 3-for-5, Turban hit 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI and Gryskevicz was 2-for-5 with a triple. Sipp, Milani and Chris DiBiaso all batted 2-for-5 in game two for Stony Brook.
The teams will be back in action tomorrow, Sunday March 26, with games three and four of the weekend series beginning at noon at the Seawolves' University Field.
