LEWISBURG, Pa. - Patriot League voters made their predictions for the 2003 men's indoor track and field season and have selected Bucknell third in the conference. The Bison garnered 72 poll points and two first-place votes. Ten-time defending Patriot League Champion Army received 89 points and eight first-place votes, while Navy received 74 points and four first-place votes.
"The Patriot League is a very competitive conference, and for our peers to pick us third tells us we're well respected. If we finish in the top three [at the league championship meet], I'll be extremely happy," said Bucknell Head Coach Kevin Donner.
Bucknell finished third in the Patriot League Championship last season in men's indoor track and field, picking up 99 points to 191 for Army and 109 for Lafayette. The Bison won the league title in each of the first three competitions, from 1991-93, but Army has a streak beginning in 1994 that has remained intact.
The indoor track and field Patriot League Championships, both on the men's and the women's side, will take place on Bucknell's campus in Gerhard Fieldhouse on Feb. 21-22. Bucknell opens its season on Saturday at Gerhard in the Bison Opener, as 14 other squads will compete against the Bison. Field events begin at 11 a.m., with running events at 12 p.m.
The voting body consisted of Patriot League coaches and sports information directors. Coming up behind Bucknell were Lafayette in fourth, American in fifth, Lehigh in sixth, Colgate in seventh, and Holy Cross in eighth.
