LEWISBURG, Pa. - The Bucknell men's and women's cross country teams will host the Gulden Invitational on Saturday, Oct. 5, racing for the first time on their home course this season. The women will start at 10 a.m., and the men's race will begin at 10:45 a.m. on the Bucknell Golf Course.
On the women's side, Bucknell will compete against Indiana University of Pa., Detroit Mercy, and Duquesne for the top slot. Indiana University of Pa. is ranked highest in Division II and will be led by Sara Raschatorie, who is a Division II All-American. Kim Hemstreet, who recently won the National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame, will lead Detroit Mercy. Duquesne has a balanced team, led by Carrie Hucko. Senior Theresa Dennis, a 2001 NCAA Division I competitor, and freshmen Alison Cole and Kayla Halloran will lead the Bison.
"We are a very young team and we will be looking to try to win out first invitational of the year," stated head coach Kevin Donner. "It looks like some of our injuries are healing and we hope to be near full strength by Saturday."
For the men, Bucknell will have to compete against nationally ranked #19 Central Michigan and Canisius for the top mark. Central Michigan has a deep team that ran great at last weeks Griak Invitational at the University of Minnesota, and placed seventh to earn its national rankings. Canisius took second two weeks ago at the National Catholic Invitational at Notre Dame, losing only to the nationally ranked Irish. Bucknell, which won the Army Invitational and placed 11th at the recent Great American Festival, will be led by seniors Greg Costello and Bryan Johnston. The Bison are currently ranked sixth in the Mid-Atlantic region.
"Central Michigan is a fantastic team and we are glad to have them at our meet," mentioned Donner. "I believe our men will run a much better team race this weekend that last weekend, which will make for a very exciting meet. Canisius has a lot of balance and I expect them to be in the top teams, as well."
Other teams that will be competing in the Gulden Invitational include Susquehanna, Quinnipiac and Patriot League opponent Colgate.
